[origin: EP0598195A1] What is described is a method for treating a thread-like structure, especially a sewing yarn or other yarn, a slubbing or a roving, in which the thread-like structure is transported at a predetermined speed relative to a treatment appliance in order to vary its properties. The treatment appliance is designed in such a way that, during treatment, the thread-like structure is subjected to a spark discharge and/or to a brief arc discharge. An apparatus for carrying out the method has a treatment appliance which comprises a transport system for the thread-like structure as well as at least one electrode, located at a distance from at least one counterelectrode, for generating the spark discharge and/or the brief arc discharge, the at least one electrode and the at least one counterelectrode being connected to a voltage source. <IMAGE>
