[origin: EP0602396A1] In a process heat generator, in which a process medium is prepared for use by combustion of one or more fossil fuels by means of a combustion air stream via combustion zones, the combustion zones (107, 110) are each fitted with a heat exchanger (108, 111) on the outflow side. The first combustion zone (107) consists of a reaction zone (103) and of an adjoining reduction zone (104), the heat exchanger (108) associated with this combustion zone (107) being placed downstream of the reaction zone (103) and upstream of the reduction zone (104). This configuration has the effect that the NOx emission values from the combustion can be minimized. <IMAGE>
