[origin: WO9302850A2] Composite fasteners (10, 80, or 820) joining panels (24, 26) together are installed by a hand-held tool (32, 128). The fastener is inserted through a hole in the panels, with the head (30) abutting one side of the panels. The tool grips a stem (18, 88, or 880) of the fastener extending beyond the panels, and exerts a pulling force which causes a rotating forming die (44, 153) to advance toward the fastener. The forming die rotates and exerts pressure against the fastener to frictionally heat and deform the shank of the fastener to create an upset head (60, 160). A sensing device (159) stops the movement of the forming die (44, 153) and controls the size of the upset head being formed. The stem (18, 88 or 880) extending from the fastener is fractured by exerting an increased pulling force on the stem.

Des dispositifs de fixation composites (10, 80 ou 820) permettant d'assembler des panneaux (24, 26) sont montés à l'aide d'un outil portatif (32, 128). Le dispositif de fixation est inséré par un trou dans les panneaux, la tête dudit dispositif venant en aboutement contre un côté des panneaux. L'outil saisit une tige (18, 88 ou 880) du dispositif de fixation s'étendant le long des panneaux, et exerce une force de traction provoquant la poussée d'une matrice à déformation plastique rotative (44, 153) vers le dispositif de fixation. La matrice à déformation plastique tourne et exerce une pression contre le dispsotif de fixation pour chauffer par friction et déformer le corps du dispositif de fixation afin de produire une tête renversée (60, 160). Un détecteur (159) arrête le mouvement de la matrice à déformation plastique (44, 153) et contrôle la dimension de la tête renversée venant d'être façonnée. La tige (18, 88 ou 880) du dispositif de fixation se brise lorsqu'on exerce sur celle-ci une force de traction plus importante.
