[origin: EP0603480A2] The sliding closure (20) is arranged at an outlet (15) of a converter (10) containing a bath of molten metal and has a refractory base plate and a refractory slide plate for the purpose of opening and closing the converter outlet. Preferably three additional refractory closure plates are sealingly arranged between the base plate (22) and slide plate (24), which closure plates are either fixedly secured to the base plate (22) or else are displaceable together with the slide plate (24). A decisive factor in the present invention is also that a number of closure plates (23) are provided between the slide plate (24) and the base plate (22) such that with these an overall plate durability is achieved which corresponds to that of the refractory sleeves (16) used for the tap hole. During the operation of the converter (10), first of all only the slide plate (24) is displaced, while the closure plates (23) are held immovably with their flow-through openings concentric to that of the base plate (22). When the slide plate (24) is worn, the latter is moved together with the next closure plate (23) up to open and close the closure (20) and, when this plate is worn, the next closure plate (23) is moved, until the base plate (22), the slide plate (24) and the closure plates (23) are all worn. By means of the coupling mechanism (30) arranged in the sliding closure (20), the closure plates (23) are in each case either coupled with or uncoupled from the slide plate (24) or else the base plate (22). Consequently, by means of the invention considerable advantages are achieved in terms of handling and with regard to the operation of the converter compared with the use of a known sliding closure. <IMAGE>
