[origin: US5406886A] An inking system for a rotary printing press is provided in which an ink application roller moves along in a frictionally engaged manner between an ink friction cylinder, which moves back and forth in the axial direction, and a plate cylinder to transfer ink to the plate cylinder for producing two quarter-cylinder-wide prints of maximum width and one half-cylinder-wide panoramic print of maximum width. Ink-free zones between the type matter on the plate cylinder are spaced from each other by less than distances between ink-free zones on an ink ductor. The ink application roller has annular grooves in its jacket surface and is disposed so that it moves back and forth at the same axial traversing frequency as the ink friction cylinder, but with a lesser traversing length.
