Un lave-cheveux automatique comprend: une cuvette de lavage, plusieurs buses diffusant séparément l'eau de lavage, un shampooing ou leur mélange, ou une solution de rinçage, éventuellement mélangée d'eau. Cet appareil se caractérise par une alimentation en eau qui fournit l'eau aux buses chargées de la diffuser, mélangée ou non au shampooing ou à la solution de rinçage, sur la chevelure. Il se caractérise aussi par un système d'alimentation en shampoing ou en solution de rinçage qui fournit sélectivement ces produits aux buses, par des soupapes connectées à ces buses et disposées dans chacun des conduits provenant de l'alimentation en eau destinée à ces buses, et par une unité de commande des alimentations en eau, en shampooing ou en solution de rinçage, ainsi que des soupapes, selon un programme de commande de lavage des cheveux. Ce dernier comprend des étapes séquentielles consistant à mouiller les cheveux avec l'eau, à les shampooiner avec le shampooing, éventuellement mélangé à de l'eau, à les rincer avec la solution de rinçage, éventuellement mélangée à de l'eau, et à les rincer avec de l'eau.
