[origin: EP0623420A1] A transporting and locating device (1) for bar-shaped workpieces (4) which can be fed to a machining centre (2) and are to be machined in the latter consists of a slide (11) traversable on a fixed rail (10), and a multiplicity of vices (21) which can be coupled to the slide (11) and in which the workpiece (4) is held by means of adjustable gripping jaws (22, 23), and actuating members (servo means 31, 41, 51) for opening the gripping jaws (22, 23) and for releasing the connection between the slide (11) and the vices (21). This configuration, by joint opening of all requisite vices (21), enables the workpiece (4) to be inserted into the vices (21) and fed to the machining centre (2) by means of the slide (11).
