Abstract (en)
Apparatus comprises a slag stopper assembly for use in molten metal or steel containing vessels and having:- a) An invented conical shaped chamber, with an open top, a base with a discharge aperture, and an annular rim around the lower end of the conical wall. b) A retractable stopper, positioned within the chamber, with an extending rod and shaped piston type lower end, configured to the outlet aperture of the chamber, and including a conical shaped chain stopper positioned at the lower end of the piston rod; and a restraining rim on the rod above the chain stopper, restricting vertical retraction of the stopper. Also claimed is a tundish and metallurgical vessel both using the above retractable stopper configuration to limit the amount of retraction of the stopper from the vessel outlet. As a slag stopper in a tundish or metallurgical vessel, particularly where the stopper chamber also serves as an alloying chamber. By limiting the retractive movement of the stopper plunger wear and tear on the plunger piston and slag stopper chamber is reduced, the amount of slag entering the chamber is reduced, whilst the metal is allowed to flow unrestricted.
