[origin: WO9407835A1] The present invention relates to a process for isomerization of lactones, more particularly various valerolactones and isomers thereof into pentenoic acids. It relates more particularly to a process for isomerization into a pentenoic acid of at least one lactone having 5 carbon atoms, caracterized in that said lactone is brought in contact in vapour phase with a solid acid catalyst selected amongst molecular acid sieves, clays, bridged clays (or pillar clays), massic oxides and acid phosphates or with a solid basic catalyst selected amongst metal basic phosphates, metal basic oxides, metal carbonates and molecular basic sieves.
