Abstract (en)

An economical source of scattered light having a simple structure is provided for uniform surface lighting. Light (A) is emitted from a fluorescent lamp (5) to an entrance surface (2) of a wedge (1), in which the light (A) is scattered and reflected repeatedly, while it leaves the wedge at reflection points (P1, P2, P3...). As the light advances in the wedge, angles of reflections ( theta 1, theta 2, theta 3...) increase, gradually, thus increasing the chance of the light to go out through the emission surface (3). This effect offsets the effect of the part adjacent to the light source (5) shining brightly, and therefore, the brightness of the emission surface (3) is made uniform. Reflecting sheets are provided on the inclined surface (4) of the wedge and on the back surface of the fluorescent lamp (5) to increase the brightness of the surface (3), and prism-like elements can be provided on the side of the emission surface (3) to correct the direction of the emission. When the source of light of the present invention is mounted on a liquid crystal display as its backlight, its display quality is improved. <IMAGE>
