Abstract (en)

[origin: EP0464217A1] An apparatus for binaurally reproducing acoustic signals using a headphone device. In the acoustic signal reproducing apparatus, a memory means stores information about transfer characteristics of the path from an imaginary source of sound to both ears of a listener in at least one quadrant around the listener. The transfer characteristics information stored in the memory means is used to form transfer characteristics information at the angular position of the head. The information thus formed is represented by the outputs of detecting means, and acoustic signals of the right and left channels are processed by acoustic signal processing means. In the acoustic signal reproducing apparatus, furthermore, at least two pieces of transfer characteristics information near the angular position of the head of the listener are read out from the memory means, and acoustic signals of the right and left channels are processed by acoustic signal processing means based on transfer characteristics information at the angular position of the head found by interpolation by the interpolation calculation means. Even when the listener moves, the acoustic signal reproducing apparatus maintains proper binaural reproduction without causing the imaginary source of sound to move owing to the use of the headphone device.
