[origin: EP0665332A1] The distance between support frame (6) or the pivot axis (21) extending in longitudinal track direction, and a support roller (10) opposite to the grinder unit (26), is reducible by a length compensation unit (14). The unit has a device (17), to generate a contact pressure force for the grinder on an inner flank of the head of the rail (3) to be ground. The contact pressure acts against a distance reduction. With max. distance between frame and support roller, the pivot axis of the frame is located at a distance, outside the rail, to a top outer rail head edge, in horizontal and in vertical direction.
