[origin: EP0666370A1] To apply a coating to a fibre web, and esp. paper, the coating is applied as an initial dosing directly to an applicator roller through at least one free spray stream. Pref. the free jet stream (13) is applied directly at the mantle surface (11, 12) of the applicator roller (1, 2), or at the surface of a transfer roller which carries the coating to the applicators (1, 2). The free jet stream (13) and/or its application angle can be adjusted.
