The material is fed from an open hopper (7) at the front and this is filled by a tipper truck (10) that drives in front of the machine. The road laying machine has a controller that receives inputs from a sensor (12) monitoring distance between vehicles, a sensor (13) for level measurement, a torque sensor (14) and feed sensors (15,16). A display (17) visible to the tipper truck driver indicates level conditions, distances and actions needed for successful transfer.
