Abstract (en)

[origin: EP0668131A1] An apparatus (10) for conveying and cutting sheet material (18) has an endless conveyor belt (16) trained over rotatable end units (22, 24). The endless belt (16) defines an upper run (26) for supporting the sheet material (18), a lower run (28) spaced below the upper run, and two arcuate end sections (30), each extending between the upper (26) and lower (28) runs. A first gap (110) is formed in the conveyor belt (16) between one end of the upper run (26) and the adjacent end section (30), and a second gap (110) is formed in the belt (16) between the other end of the upper run (26) and the adjacent end section (30). A cutting unit (32) is supported over the upper run (26) for cutting the sheet material (18), and a vacuum is introduced in the upper run (26) for creating a vacuum bed to hold the sheet material (18) against the supporting surface (38) during a cutting operation. Two end sealing assemblies (20) are mounted between the upper and lower run (26, 28), and each is located adjacent to a respective gap (110) in the conveyor (16). Each end sealing assembly (20) includes one or more sealing strips (188) extending substantially across the width of the conveyor belt (16), and movable between sealing and retracted positions. In the sealing position, each sealing strip (188) is received within the adjacent gap (110) in the conveyor, and engages an end surface (102, 106) of the upper run (26) to seal the engaged surface, thereby preventing the leakage of air through the respective end of the vacuum bed. In the retracted position, each sealing strip (188) is retracted from the respective gap (110) to a position below the upper run (26) away from the path of conveyor movement. <IMAGE>
