[origin: EP0668236A1] A travelling crane has a grab (5) for picking up goods, equipped with laser distance sensors (21) to measure the position of the load's outer edges relative to the ground, or target position. This is done with the help of mirrors (26). With regard to the transport direction, there is one sensor both fore and aft. As the load swings during transport, its bottom edge cuts or leaves the field of vision of each sensor. The sensors are connected to equipment (43) which is used to "lock the load". The mirrors are held in position by springs (51). On the grab are collision monitors which can automatically deflect the mirrors.
