Prepn. of 2-nitrobenzaldehyde cpds. of formula (I) comprises oxidn. of a 2-nitrotoluene cpd. with oxygen or an oxygen-contg. gas, in the presence of at least one alkoxyalkylamine cpd. as solvent, and in the presence of a strong base. X1, X2 = H or halo; or one of X1 is NO2 and the other is H.

Das neue Verfahren zur Herstellung von 2-Nitrobenzaldehyden der allgemeinen Formel <IMAGE> worin X1 und X2 entweder unabhängig voneinander für Wasserstoff oder Halogen stehen oder einer der Substituenten für Nitro steht und der andere Substituent dann für Wasserstoff steht, durch Oxidation von 2-Nitrotoluolen der allgemeinen Formel <IMAGE> worin X1 und X2 die oben angegebene Bedeutung haben, ist dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Oxidation mit Sauerstoff oder einem Sauerstoff enthaltenden Gas in Gegenwart mindestens eines Alkoxyalkylamins als Lösungsmittel und in Gegenwart von starken Basen durchgeführt wird.
