[origin: EP0672506A1] A hammer housing (20) connected to a pressure conduit (10) and a backflow conduit (12) contains a working cylinder (21) in which a piston (22) is movable and a back space (50) in which the rearward end of the hammer piston moves. A control device (40) introduces pressure fluid into the working cylinder, and the piston alternatively executes forwardly directed work strokes and back strokes. The piston during the work stroke strikes against an anvil surface (23). To the back space a pressure gas accumulator (52) is connected and the back space is connected to a pressure source via a feed conduit (55), contg. a pressure-controlled valve (58). The valve supplies a constant pressure which is lower than that in the pressure conduit (10), and the back space remains closed during the back stroke of the piston.
