[origin: WO9413951A1] Proposed is a method of cylinder identification in an idling internal combustion engine in the absence of a phase signal or when the phase signal is defective. To this end, an ignition spark is generated in each cylinder by each crankshaft and the prescribed idle-control advance angle is altered for at least one ignition in one cylinder in every second crankshaft rotation. The reaction of the engine to this alteration of the advance angle in the advance or retard direction is determined by detecting irregular running or by monitoring the air feed control, and cylinder allocation is determined accordingly.
