The use of bis(N-2-sulphoethyl-3,3-dimethylindolenin-2-yl) heptamethine cyanine dyes of formula (I) as IR absorbers in photographic Ag halide materials is claimed: R<1>, R<2> = H, OH, 1-4C alkoxy, NH2, mono- or di-(1-4 C)-alkylamino or halogen; M<+> = a cation. Also claimed is photographic material contg. (I) as IR absorber.

Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft die Verwendung von Farbstoffen der allgemeinen Formel I <IMAGE> worin R¹ und R² und M<⊕> wie in Anspruch 1 angegeben definiert sind, als infrarotabsorbierende Mittel in fotografischen Aufzeichnungsmaterialien auf Silberhalogenidbasis sowie Farbstoffe der allgemeinen Formel I enthaltende fotografische Aufzeichnungsmaterialien auf Silberhalogenidbasis.
