[origin: EP0679836A1] The water feed to the boiler of the steam generating unit has a low pressure water pump (20) which pumps water from a feed reservoir (12) to a main pump (24). The main pump is in two stages (26,28) separated by a water preheater (32) warmed by return steam. The two stages of the main pump operate at staggered pressures, higher than the feed pump, and pump preheated water into the boiler. The pumps are driven off the same motor (16) with the feed pump driven by the motor, the first stage of the main pump driven via a reduction gearing (22) and the second, higher pressure stage driven from the first stage via a slip coupling (24) which allows the final stage to be operated at different speeds. <IMAGE>
