[origin: EP0680806A1] The applicator, esp. for an abrasive strip used in machining cylindrical components such as crankshaft journals, consists of an arm which is able to pivot and move vertically, equipped with three shoes (7,8) - an upper central one (7) and two lower lateral ones (8a,8b) on jaws (2a,2b) which are pivoted to the arm and able to lock together so that the three shoes are located at the points of an equilateral triangle round the journal (6). The arm's first shoe has a concave surface for the abrasive strip, covering an angle of over 90 but less than 180 degrees, and is controlled by two horizontal sensors situated between the ends of the shoe and which measure the diameter of the journal. Each of the shoes on the two jaws also has a concave surface which extends through an angle of slightly less than 90 degrees, so that the three shoes together cover an angle of at least 270 degrees round the outer surface of the journal. <IMAGE>
