[origin: EP0681153A1] Compressed air is cleaned, cooled, and then fractionated in the pressure section (3). Streams (8,9) are further fractionated (2) by the two-stage LP section (4) into N2 and O2 products, at the head (10) and base (11) respectively. Heat is exchanged between the bottom of the LP stage (4), and the top of the pressure stage (3). Under steady state standby operation, virtually all fluid returning to the bottom of the LP section (4) is piped (11,12) to the buffer (13). This (13) supplies fluid (16) to the indirect heat exchanger (6), which is partially evaporated by heat from condensing gas (5) from the top of the pressure section (3). The vapour (17,18) is returned low in the LP column; residual fluid is returned (17,12) to the buffer (13). Plant to carry out the procedure described above, is also claimed. <IMAGE>
