[origin: WO9417296A1] The mechanical power supplied by an engine (1) to an auxiliary apparatus (23) is reduced during a cold starting phase of the engine with respect to the power normally absorbed by the normally operating apparatus. When the apparatus is an alternator, a reduction in the power supplied by the engine, and a resulting drop in pollution, may be achieved by reducing the alternator exciting current (I) under the control of a computational unit (11).
