[origin: EP0682466A1] The device has an X-ray generator tube (1), with a heated cathode supplied with a heating current (Ih), which is raised to a higher boost value for a timed boost interval, at the end of which the heating current is dropped to a lower value and the tube voltage (U) is switched in. During a test mode, the heating current is raised to the boost value with the tube current switched in, with measurement of the resulting tube current and storage of the obtained current characteristic, used for determining the boost interval. <IMAGE>
