Abstract (en)
[origin: EP0685635A1] A breather for the crankcase of an IC engine uses an electrostatic filter (1) as an oil separator. The filter may be tubular or flat. It may be have one or more stages. It is in series with at least one more oil separator located before it with reference to flow direction of the centrifugal, baffle or fibre type. The return pipe (4) from the electrostatic filter has a trap (41) or non-return valve. The electrostatic filter has a metal earthed pipe (2) guiding the fumes with a central rod or thin tube (3) insulated from it and charged to twelve or twenty four volts from a generator. <IMAGE>
