[origin: EP0691215A1] The wire (66) is indexed in its lengthwise direction through a guide (96), after which a cutting tool (100) parts it off into lengths (40). Each of these is then secured in the gap (70) between holders (72,76), part (78) of it protruding from the gap. The tool (34) if the stapling head moves past the holders at right angles to the wire. The holders move in relation to each other from the rest position into the clamping one (94') narrowing the gap and back again, and the holder mechanism (64) is so mounted in relation to the guide that the leading end of the wire is thrust forward between the holders while they are in the free position.
