[origin: WO9521871A1] This invention relates to an ionic liquid comprising a dialkyl substituted imidazolium halide wherein at least one of the said alkyl substituents has 6 or more carbon atoms, a method of preparation of such imidazolium halides, and the use thereof for hydrocarbon conversion reactions such as oligomerization or polymerization of olefins and for the alkylation of paraffins, isoparaffins or aromatics with olefins. Polymerization of C4 raffinates using these ionic liquids as catalysts enables a much higher percentage of n-butenes to be incorporated in the product polymer than would be possible in conventional cationic polymerization processes.
