Abstract (en)

[origin: EP0693365A2] The appts. to fit cord handles to tote bags has a section (15,16) to clamp the edges of the bag together with a punch (20) to stamp holes in the bag edges. A feed (19) guides the cord between the stamped holes for the cord ends to be knotted (17,18). At least the feed (19) for the cord (3) is at the clamping unit or can be positioned at it. Controls operate the punch stamping and cord feed alternately. Also claimed is an operation where the appts. is passed over the bag edges for them to be clamped. The punch is activated to stamp holes in the bag edges and a guide channel for the cord is formed between the two knotting units (17,18), giving an exact positioning of the stamped holes and the cord guide (19). An air stream carries the cord through the first module (17) and the first punched hole, through the guide channel (19) and through the second punched hole to the second knotting module (18). A cutter severs the cord (3), and the free cord ends are clamped at the knotting modules (17,18). The cord guide channel (19) is moved away from the knotting modules (17,18) to tense the knots and pull them clear of the modules (17,18). The two half sections of the cord guide (19) are opened, to release the cord handle loop. <IMAGE>
