[origin: EP0693600A1] The horizontal support beam (4) is normally under tension when loaded and has the load bearing surface (2) attached to its upper edge by special fittings (6) which allow some relative movement between the surface and the beam. The load bearing surface is under compression. The maximum amount of relative movement is 10 mm and can be backed by elastic padding. A construction has fastening bolts located in an elastic padding. The elastic padding can be an intermediate layer between the beam and the surface, with the friction providing damping. The fastenings can be at selected points along the structure. <IMAGE>
