[origin: WO9501121A1] An applicator (10) for liquids or pastes in a container (14) with a hollow plug (18) insertable into the mouth of the container and having a passage (26) which can be closed by a spring-loaded valve component, and an applicator component (20) on the surface away from the container consisting of a spongy or other porous permeable material. In the surface of the hollow plug (18) facing the applicator component there is a recess into which the passage (26) opens and the valve components has a valve plate (28) arranged in the recess which is prestressed by a spring in a position raised from its sealing surface on the base of the recess. The container has a cap (16) which can be secured on the container neck (12) and has a projection (48) on the inner side of its end wall towards the applicator component which, with the cap secured on the neck of the container according to the instructions, bears against the sealing surface in the recess. The valve plate (28), together with the spring (32) prestressing it in the raised position, takes the form of an integral valve component (30) inserted into the recess in the hollow plug (18).
