[origin: EP0694664A1] The device comprises an electrically operated lock (1) for a road vehicle, associated with a control system (5,6,7) and a power supply. The lock is normally opened by an actuator deriving power from the vehicle battery (4a). In the event of failure of the vehicle battery supply, electricity may be supplied by an emergency battery (2) fitted within the door to which the lock is attached. The battery may actually be within the lock itself, and may be associated with an electronic interface (3) which detects the failure of the main vehicle battery. A sound warning device may indicate that the emergency battery has taken over, and that there is a limited operating time available. <IMAGE>
