[origin: WO9425905A1] Single sheets (A) are drawn of a first stack (8) of single sheets and carried on a first substrate conveyor (1) in the usual way. At its end there is a switch (10) which alternately diverts the single sheets (A) to a second and a third substrate conveyor (2, 3). In the second substrate conveyor (2), which takes the form of a loop, the single sheets (A) are shifted sideways by one sheet width. A sideways-shifted single sheet (A1) and a sheet (A2) which has not been so shifted arrive at a fourth substrate conveyor (4) at the same time, on which they are taken in pairs to a printing unit (D) spanning the fourth substrate conveyor (4) and extracted therefrom. Then one single sheet (A1) per pair of sheets is shifted back by one sheet width in a fifth substrate conveyor also in the form of a loop while the other single sheets (A) arrive in succession at a second single sheet stack (9) and are placed thereon.
