[origin: WO9427050A1] In a rotary screw compressor having its drive shaft (14) extending through the low pressure end section into a cavity having a pressure above the delivery pressure, seal means (17) are provided around the drive shaft (14). That cavity can be the motor space of a hermetic refrigeration compressor in which liquid refrigerant is supplied by a pump from the condenser to the motor space for cooling the motor. According to the invention the seal means (17) include a lip seal (20) adjacent to the cavity, a non-contacting seal (24) adjacent to the compressor working space and an intermediate chamber (22) to which barrier liquid is supplied, the pressure of which is slightly lower than the pressure in the cavity.
