Abstract (en)

[origin: WO9428783A1] A medical video endoscope system (22) for allowing high-resolution three-dimensional images to be viewed has a stereoscopic endoscope (26) for converting optical images (54, 56) of an object (24) to left and right video image signals (62, 64). A rigid sheath assembly (300, 302) with an angled distal tip (310) can be placed over a barrel (66) of the endoscope (26) and rotated with respect thereto in order to change the viewing direction of the stereoscopic endoscope. A conventional two-dimensional endoscope (330) can be coupled to the three-dimensional medical video system (22) by using a camera head (46, 48) designed to convert the two-dimensional optical images (54, 56) generated by the conventional endoscope (26) into left and right signals (62, 64) which are then processed by the system (22) as if they were received from a stereoscopic endoscope to create a two-dimensional video image.
