Abstract (en)

[origin: WO9500814A1] The invention concerns a device, which is inexpensive to manufacture and easy to use, for warding off an attack by, instance, temporarily arresting an attacker or fending off a flying object and, if necessary, also emitting distress signals or discharging a liquid to facilitate subsequent police enquiries. The invention calls for a stable, wide-meshed net (36), optionally impregnated with irritants or odiferous agents, to be deployed by means of a handy gas-pressure-operated device (12). The net (36) is stowed folded up in a dispenser (11) from where it is pulled out and spread out by weights (40) which are ejected on divergent trajectories from the dispenser by the combustion gases produced by an alarm pistol or by the gas from a pierced gas cartridge (13). The device (12) is designed in the shape of a slim cylinder and is armed by rotating the trigger (28) and fired by sliding the trigger (28) in the longitudinal direction, the trigger (28) acting on a previously hand-tensioned spring (19) designed to drive a pin into the gas cartridge. The device (12) can also be fitted inside another item of equipment, e.g. at the rear end of the hollow handgrip (34) of a police baton or heavy-duty flashlight.
