[origin: EP0705951A1] The vehicle door restraint has a rigid door restraint element (2) pivoted about an axis parallel to the hinge axis of the door and an associated braking or clamping device, respectively attached to the door and the frame, or vice versa. The braking or clamping device is operated in dependence on the door opening angle, the momentary angular velocity of the door and the door opening or closing force, with driven braking or clamping element rotated into its working position via a servo drive, e.g. an electric motor.
