[origin: EP0708245A1] The gear pump consists of several meshing gears (4,5) counter-rotating in a housing (3), with one gear coupled to a drive. A hollow cylinder (9) in which a piston (10) axially slides, is coupled to a side wall (7) of the pump. The piston crown abuts the front side of the gears in basic position. Pref. the piston crown fully covers the gears. The centre points of the piston crown and addendum circle of the teeth may lie on one axis. The piston crown surface may be similar to that of the addendum envelope, while the gear front sides are fully covered.
