[origin: DE4416518A1] The proposal is for a device for butt-welding plastic sections, especially pipes. The sections to be welded are coaxially positioned and relatively axially moved by means of clamping devices. The faces of the sections to be welded are taken to the necessary welding temperature by a heating device (15) which can be fitted between them. The heating device (15)consists of at least one flat resistance heating element (19) to apply infra-red radiation directly to the faces of the sections. Protective plates of infra-red-transparent glass-ceramic material are arranged at a distance from the section faces as separate plates between the heating element (19) and said faces. The direct heating of the faces of the sections to be welded by the heating element makes very fast, energy-saving heating to the necessary welding temperature possible, while the protective infra-red-transparent glass-ceramic contact prevention plates have a negligible effect on the heat transmission.
