[origin: EP0709323A1] The items are delivered to the track (21) via a number of stations (22). Each has a discharge mechanism for the items to the track from a buffer-storage unit (23). The latter are in turn loaded via a mobile feed conveyor (25) from a main storage unit (26). The feed conveyor contains drive and transport mechanisms for the periodic loading of the buffer-storage units at a predetermined speed which is greater than that at which the units discharge to the track. The capacity of the buffer-storage units can be at least equal to that of the main unit. The feed conveyor can be equipped to accommodate loaded storage units and discharge empty ones. It can be formed by or coupled to a steerable truck.
