[origin: EP0711851A1] Prodn. of a p-hydroxybenzaldehyde of formula (I) comprises electrochemical oxidn. of a phenol of formula (II) in the presence of an alkanol of formula R1OH in the presence of less than the stoichiometric amt. of an organic or inorganic base that can convert (II) to the corresp. phenolate; the reaction mixt. is worked up hydrolytically, and (I) is isolated. R1 = 1-6C alkyl; X = 2-4 inert substits. Pref. (II) has the formula (IIa). R2, R3 = 1-18C alkyl or 1-18C alkoxy, pref. tert. butyl.
