[origin: EP0716190A1] The appliance has a cutter (80) with frame (60), which carries a device to loosen the material on the advance face of the trench, resp. on the trench bottom. The device has at least one undercutting tool. The tool has a cutter arm (35) with a cutter head (47) rotating about the longitudinal centre axis (M) of the arm. The arm is pivoted by a piston/cylinder unit (46) about a horizontal pivot axis (S), which extends at right angles to the longitudinal direction of the trench. The cutter head carries one or more pref. five cutter rollers (53) on its end face.
