[origin: WO9507031A1] A rotary cutter for cutting compressed tobacco leaves (30) to provide cut rag is disclosed. The cutter is capable of providing cut rag of different cut widths and cut strand length by employing plain or controlled strand length knives of different thicknesses. A knife (62) is mounted on the drum (60) of the cutter in a flat, and held in place by a gripper (108). If the knife is thinner than the thickest blade on the drum, a shim (106) is provided between the drum and the knife. The shim ends short of the blade (70) of the knife, so that a cavity bar (104) can lie adjacent the blade.
