[origin: WO9602007A1] The field of locating cellular telephones suffers from high multipath city environments which affect accuracy. This problem can be overcome by a two tiered approach including a general location determination using cellular base station located system (10) and subsequent finite location using a portable receiver (26) capable of functioning in high multipath environments. Applications include emergency calls and criminal investigations.
