Abstract (en)
[origin: EP0723131A1] The shield consists of a body with inner dimensions substantially greater than the calibre of the weapon, having at least one stage with two gills (22e) extended by vanes (22b) against which propellant gases impinge and create a force in the opposite direction. The shield incorporates a tubular member (5) which extends from the free end of the barrel, is fitted inside the body (22) and is pierced with a series of holes (54) which direct the propellant gases towards the vanes. The inner diameter (d1) of the tubular member (5) is between the diameters (d2, d3) of the barrel's inner surface and the bottom of its rifling grooves. The inner surface of the tubular member can be smooth or rifled, and its diameter can be the same as the diameter of the barrel or its rifling grooves. Each of its holes (54) has an inner ovoid shape with its larger diameter between 15 and 40 mm and its smaller one between 10 and 15 mm, and is set at an angle to the axis of the member which is similar to that of the body's inner wall. The thickness of the tubular member is between about 5 and 10 mm, and it is made from steel with an elasticity limit of some 1000 MPa.
