[origin: EP0723318A2] The carbon brush (110) has a square or cylindrical geometry with sides or ends. One end lies against a commutator or slip ring of an electric motor, this comprises current carrying flexes (120) in the brush (110). A switch off button (118), preferably of insulating material, is spring biased in the longitudinal direction of the brush axis. The brush (110) also has an indicator flex (122). This is arranged and fixed in place with a section (124) of a first recess (116), e.g. a bore, which runs in the longitudinal direction of the brush (110). The indicator flex (122) generates a signal to display a predetermined brush load by alternating with the commutator or slip ring. The indicator flex (122) is fixed in place by a second recess (130). The latter extends from a side (128) of the brush (110).
