[origin: WO9512012A1] The invention relates to a process for fabricating a refractory coating on a metal substrate in order to create a protection layer having a high hardness, capable of withstanding high temperatures. The process comprises: (a) forming on the substrate surface a porous layer consisting of oxides or hydroxides of the metal or metals (M1) of the substrate; (b) depositing on said porous layer at least one refractory oxide and/or hydroxide of an element or elements (M2) different from the metal or metals (M1); and (c) heating the assembly to a temperature causing surface reaction of the oxides of the porous layer and the refractory oxide or oxides in order to form one or more mixed oxides of the elements in the presence of (M1, M2).
