[origin: WO9510014A1] A grate cooler (1) for cooling granular material, such as cement clinker, comprises a special duct system (16, 19, 17) for injection of air into the gaps (15) which exist between the edge guards (13) and the grate plates (9) at the edges of the grate surface. The gaps (15) between the edge guards (13) and the grate plates (9) are thus kept free from clinker material, thereby minimizing the wear in this zone.
