[origin: WO9514843A1] A louvered window covering (101), such as a vertical or horizontal venetian blind, is provided with a thermal actuator to automatically rotate slats (103) forming the louvered window covering (101) between open and closed positions. The actuator includes at least one shape memory alloy spring (145A) that, when heated above a predetermined temperature, extends to engage and move a rack (135A, B) that drives a pinion gear (133). The pinion gear (133) rotates, through a coupling mechanism (129), a rod (119) extending the length of the blind. A second shape memory alloy spring (145B) may be installed to rotate the rod (119) in the opposite direction. The rod (119) intercouples the slats (103) in a manner such that the rotation of the rod (119) rotates the slats (103) in unison between closed and open positions. The shape memory alloy spring (145A, B) may be heated with a current supplied by a controller (401) in response to a predetermined environmental condition.
