[origin: EP0735185A2] A calender for treatment of paper on both sides has a stack of rollers, the top and bottom ones being hard with hard and soft rollers in between where there is a mechanically active gap formed between hard and soft rollers and a changeover gap between two soft rollers. Forces acting at the stack ends load it in a direction through it. The stack (1) has 8 rollers (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9), the two middle rollers (5, 6) forming the changeover gap (16) and one (6) of these can be adjusted to bow by providing lift to its cover (22). This achieved by an upper (23) and a lower (24) support appts. both of which rest on a support (25) which passes through the cover. The force exerted on the cover by the upper support appts. is greater than that exerted by the lower.
